I’m late to the party with Audiobook Week at Devourer of Books.
Here’s yesterday’s question:
Are you new to audiobooks in the last year? Have you been listening to them forever but discovered something new this year? Favorite titles? New times/places to listen? This is your chance to introduce yourself and your general listening experience.
I’ve been listening to them forever I think. I usually listen to them in the car. Now that I don’t have as long of a commute I don’t get as many in as I used to.
My all time favorite audiobook has to be
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

Wil Wheaton does a great job narrating this book that celebrates 1980s geek culture. As a 1980s era geek, I totally approve.
My other favorites are the Harry Dresden books by Jim Butcher. The reason for that is covered in the next question.
How do you decide what you’ll listen to? Do you mostly listen, or split time between listening and reading? Particularly if you split time, how do you decide what you’ll consume in audio and what in print?
I choose audiobooks over print versions in 2 ways. One category of books needs to be quick, plot driven books. I hate listening to long descriptions on audio. I hate long descriptive paragraphs anyway but if I was reading them I’d skim. On audio I have to listen to every painful word.
The other category of books is different. These are the books that I want to last for a long time. The Dresden Files are my example of this. I started reading this series a few years ago and quickly caught up to what is now being published. I know that if I got the print version I’d stay up and read it all quickly because I love them and then I’d have to wait at least another year to get the next installment. On audio they last longer. Besides, James Marsters is doing the narration and he’s awesome.

This is book one and they just keep getting better. During the last book I remember shutting off the audio during a lunch break because I getting too worried about a character. I knew if he died I was going to lose it and it would be hard to go back to work. I wouldn’t have been that involved if it wasn’t on audio.

I’m the exact same way with audiobooks either I choose fast paced books or something I’ve been meaning to read catches my eye. I have listened to a few .. okay 1 … long audiobook and it wasn’t terrible, but there were parts where I knew I would have skimmed in the book.
