In the December issue of Yoga Journal there is an article about Women for Women. This is an organization that matches female sponsors with women who have lived through wars. The sponsors provide both financial support and emotional support through letters.

Founded in 1993, Women for Women International helps women in war-torn regions rebuild their lives by providing financial and emotional support, job skills training, rights awareness and leadership education and access to business skills, capital and markets. Through the program, women become confident, independent and productive as they embrace the importance of their roles in rebuilding their families, their communities and ultimately, their nations.

That sounded like something I would be interested in but I figured it would be expensive. While the webpage was loading (slow dial-up) I was thinking that I am about finished with my year-long Ninth Wave class. That cost $25 a month. I was hoping that there was a partial sponsorship or something that I could do for that amount.

It turns out that the sponsorship is only $27 a month! I obviously can already live without that money so I signed up. I’ll be matched with a woman in either Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq, Kosovo, Nigeria, Rwanda, or Sudan. When I signed up a didn’t specify a country. They can put me wherever they want.

I’m excited. I don’t know why I’ve never heard of this organization before. I see on the website that they have been featured in Oprah’s magazine recently so hopefully they will get a lot of responses.
