Novellas/Short StoriesÂ
Now it is time to give a little love to those little stories in your life. Share your love for your favorite shorts of any form. What is a short story or novella that doesn’t get the attention that it deserves? Recommend to readers what shorts you would recommend they start with. How about listing some short story anthologies based upon genres or authors?
I’m not a huge fan of reading short story collections but there are a few that have made an impression.
I’m still mad.
I read this sometime in the late 80s. I don’t know how I ended up with a copy. I read the first story, Rage. It was about a kid taking a classroom hostage back when that was an outrageous idea. Then I moved onto The Long Walk. It is a dystopian novella about teenage boys who are chosen to walk along a road. Any one who falls below 4 miles per hour is killed. This goes on until 1 remains. It is very Hunger Games. The boys spend the time walking and talking to each other bonding while knowing that they are almost all going to die. This story went on forever. Stephen King novellas are the length of other people’s novels. I wanted to know what was going to happen so badly that I kept reading. Then I got to the ending. It made me furious. I remember throwing the book across the room. I never picked up the book again. I didn’t realize until I embedded this image that The Running Man was in there and I neglected to read it.
I’m not a mystery fan but I like Dick Francis. His collection of short stories is particularly good.
I like all of David Sedaris’ stories especially on audio.
I wrote a short story that got published once in an anthology. I saw a notice on a website that asked for submissions for stories about sex and science. My first thought was “I know about science!” which just highlights how much of a nerd I really am.
Considering the subject matter I didn’t write it under my own name. It is still available but the book will make your eyeballs blush. You’ve been warned.
Oh Yes! David Sedaris on audio is fantastic. While Engulfed in Flames was my first from him and still my favorite.
I haven’t read any of King’s short stories but I’m not sure I’m brave enough to. LOL!
I love that your first thought was “I know about science!” My husband used to retell Stephen King’s short novels to me on car trips. I’ve never read them, but I feel like I have. I find it funny that you are still mad. I guess it made an impression!!
Did you enjoy writing the short story and would you do it again?
Oh, I love David Sedaris! Such fun. But I steer clear of Stephen King myself–some things I just don’t want sharing head space with me!
