Hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. I had a slow reading week since most of my spare time was taken up looking for houses online.

The Penguin Who Knew Too Much by Donna Andrews

Meg Langslow and her fiance are moving into an old farmhouse.  All her assorted relatives are helping and then there will be a big picnic.  Meg is planning on slipping away in the chaos of the party to elope.  But a few days before, her father finds a dead body in the basement.  It is the owner of a local zoo whose financial troubles have caused the animals to be temporarily fostered out.  Now animals are being dropped off at the farm too.  If the murder isn’t solved in a few days, Meg is never going to be able leave for her honeymoon.

This is part of a series that I’ve read but I missed this one.  The murder doesn’t make a whole lot of sense but I enjoy the characters in the stories.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Jacob’s grandfather always told fantastic stories about the home for refugee children that he lived in during the war until Jacob was old enough to realize that stories about levitating children couldn’t be true.  When his grandfather is murdered he realizes that there has to be some truth to the stories after all.  He goes to investigate.

This story is written about a group of old photos that show children appearing to levitate and invisible men, etc.  The story is creepy and perfect for Halloween.
