I’ve been trying all day to think of something profound all day to write about veteran’s day. I’ve never paid any attention to it before but now I live with a veteran of many combat situations. So I live with the nightmares, the injuries, the heightened vigilance, and the bureaucracy of trying to deal with it all. He mutters about trading away his health and athleticism in order to defend people who really don’t know what they did or even want to know or care. No matter what you think about wars or our foreign policy serving in the military is a voluntary choice made by millions in order to defend those of us who stay behind and many are paying for it for the rest of their lives.

So thank a veteran today.

(Now, my personal veteran had a plan for proper “servicing” of a veteran to thank him for service. I told him that it was a great idea. He should go find me some veterans so I could thank them. He said that was wonderfully patriotic of me but I’d be really tired and sore when I got done. That would be bad because he’d spend the day throwing my stuff out on the lawn and I’d be too tired to move it all after “working” all day. I told him that that was not very patriotic of him at all! So make sure to get approval for your Thanking A Veteran plan.)
