I’ve wanted to do a quote journal for a while but starting has always seems daunting. I highlight quotes when reading ebooks that get kept on Goodreads. But I don’t often go back and revisit them except for an occasional post. After Reading The Notebook and watching some YouTube channels about notebooks I realized that what I really wanted was a zibaldone.
A zibaldone is actually what most people are thinking of when they talk about commonplace books. It is a collection of whatever you think is important enough to remember. Officially commonplace books should have a strict structure. Everything about one subject should be in one “common place”. That’s why there are all kinds of formal plans for how to structure them and do indexes. I’m not about that life. I’m going freeform.
I got a Leuchtturm 1917 notebook for Christmas to get started. I keep some quotes in little notebooks I have around but if they stand the test of time or if I really like them to start with, they are going in here.
If you watch a lot of videos about this, then you start thinking that you have to do fancy lettering and stuff. That also can stop you from getting started. I can’t do fancy lettering. I finally just decided to dive and start.
My first page was from a book I’m currently reading – History Matters by David McCullough.
I know I’m also going to add in a section with the important sayings from my weight loss program, Body Slims. I have written down all over the place but I’m going to get them in one place.
