A book that I’ve reread multiple times is The Fresco by Sherri S. Tepper.
This book is:
- a book I’d love to make everyone read even though I know not everyone would understand it or like it
- a good glimpse into my brain because I love this book and want to live in this version of our world
There are two storylines in this book that come together.
First is the story of alien first contact with Earth. It is done through a woman in an abusive marriage so, of course, she isn’t believed at first. Earth isn’t ready to be part of the galactic neighborhood because we are too primitive but events have forced the aliens’ hands. They are just going to have to force us to live up to their standards.
Second is the backstory of the aliens as it is being told to their human envoy. It is an explanation of why this alien race takes on this work of civilizing other planets. In the middle of civilizing Earth, events on their home world make them question their entire purpose.
The book is an exploration of religion and what it takes to live in peace. It lives in my head and it often pops up when I listen to the news. I wish the aliens were here to fix things with their brand of Neighborliness.
