“It is not an easy thing to slip a knife between a man’s ribs. So the hand that wields the blade has been practising.”
This is an ARC about a world of bookshops connected to a magical river where the ink on the pages of books can be used as weapons in the hands of skilled readers. The problem I’m having with it is that the magical system isn’t well defined. I’m most of the way through the book and I don’t understand it. I think it is trying very hard to be a clever and literary fantasy mystery and is just going over my head.
Friday 56 quote:
“Third sons do not inherit bookshops.
Third sons sweep floors, polish light fittings, check stock long after everyone else has gone to bed. Third sons get loaned out to other owners as and when they’re required, and returned when they’re not.”
Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader. Friday 56 is hosted at Head Full of Books.
