What are my reading goals for 2024?

I don’t set goals for the number of books to read. I just let that all happen naturally. This year I’m going to be sticking with some of the goals I’ve had for the last few years.

Read Books by Authors from South of the Equator

I’ve been doing better in the last few years getting books by Australian and New Zealand authors. I’ve picked up some South African books. I really would like more sub-Saharan Africa and South America but here’s the issue I run into. What gets translated into English tends to be so overwhelmingly “literary” i.e. miserable and depressing. I’m not into that. Give me romance. Give me fantasy or sci-fi or nonfiction. I’ll even take nonfiction set in these areas by authors from elsewhere if I have to. I just don’t want to be super depressed after reading the book. I know life is hard. Reading is an escape. I’m open to any suggestions that you have.

Read Books on My TBR Lists

For the last several years I’ve had a goal to read a book that I already own each month. I failed spectacularly. I’m a mood reader. Even if I really, really try I never once finished the book I picked to read that month. A few months ago I broadened this category to include reading books that are on my Goodreads TBR list. I have some good books on there. I realized that when I was going through finding books for SciFi Month. I read a few books off the list for that month and enjoyed them. I realized that past me had good taste when I put them on the list. So now I’m going to try to request something from the library each month and read it.

That’s it. Those are my two goals. Other than that I read whatever shiny thing tickles my fancy.
