I’m going for the TTT/Wyrd & Wonder combination today and listing (mostly) fantasy books that include travel by water.
First up, we have literal travel by water.
In Nine Tailed the main character can travel by stepping into water and emerging out of other bodies of water anywhere on earth.
Let’s go with a classic. In Witches Abroad, the witches of Lancre need to leave their mountain home to help someone. That’s hard on them so that’s hard on everyone around them. They travel partially by riverboat. Granny Weatherwax’s gambling scene to make some money on the riverboat is classic.
This is a book two where you need to read book 1 for it to make sense. Basically, the heroines are hunting down some missing dragon eggs. A river pirate is involved.
In The Spellshop a librarian flees a revolution that burns her library in a boat. She sails to her home island along with her sentient spider plant.
Now for the non-fantasy
One year after her fiancé died, Anna realizes it is the day that they were supposed to leave for their Caribbean sailing trip. She decides to make the trip by herself. This book is so good.
This is nonfiction about a woman who spent a lot of her life sailing in the south Pacific and running tiny bookstores. I’ve just started it and so far there is a lot of maddening sexism in her life. There is also sexual assault so trigger warning for that.
This book might be slightly out of date now but I loved it. You might not think a book about shipping would be interesting but it was fascinating. The audiobook was very well done.
