Looking back at the nonfiction I read I can see that it falls mainly in certain categories.
Food

Memoirs

History

But how do I actually choose what to read?
I’m a huge mood reader. The right book has to strike me at the right time. I can’t stick to a TBR list to save my life. If I buy a book? Forget it. That book is probably never getting read.
I like to browse the Libby app for my library and see what nonfiction they have in. I put a hold on anything they have that sounds good. Of course that means that everything is going to come at once. Hopefully, I get to read some of it before it goes back to the library.
I don’t use my Goodreads TBR as much as I used to. I’ll put books on there if I don’t have time to look them up on Libby or the Kindle Unlimited page right away but it more of a placeholder until I can do that.
What am I looking for?
- I want to learn about something that catches my eye
- I want the experience to be fun. I don’t have to have to slog through technical writing on my off time.
- I really like books about very niche subjects. If I tell people (especially nonreaders) what my book is about, they tend to look at me oddly. A book about one guy trying to make maple syrup for a season? Perfect. A book following people rescuing turtles for a year? Right up my alley.

So what nonfiction am I actually reading this week?
I have two books in progress now.
I’ve been slowly reading this one. It is about women’s fight for equality in science research and teaching at MIT.
Pro:
- It’s interesting and important history
Con:
- It’s pretty dry reading so it is taking me forever to read because I can’t make myself just sit down for long periods of time and lose myself in it.
I just picked this up at a library used book sale. I’m trying to circumvent buying books and never reading them by reading it immediately. That got a little derailed by it getting moved out of the way of some house repairs. I swear I have no object permanence so I forgot about it for a few days when I didn’t see it where I left it but I remembered now. It fits the fun vibe and it is about cows. Cows are nice as long as I don’t have to doctor on them in the middle of the night anymore.

I read so many books from Libby. So thankful to have access to a good library for free books! T-shirt Swim Club really catches my eye. I wonder if it’s similar to Fat Talk; I read that a year ago and it quite insightful.
I love a book about an obscure year doing an odd thing, too. I call them “quest” books and have a good old shelf of them. I have now added “The Sugar Rush” to my Week 5 Added to my TBR draft – so far you’ve recommended me all the books I’ve added!
I like books about niche subjects too. I remember telling my coworkers that I was reading a book about how the funeral industry operates, and they were confused and horrified.
I’m eating some maple fudge as I read your post… ‘Sugar Rush’ sounds like the fun read I need. Hope ‘The Exceptions’ picks up for you. Nonfiction is no fun when there’s nothing to pull you along.
History is my main genre that I read when it comes to nonfiction but I try to branch out now and again. Try being the keyword hehe
Are you a vet? I think cows are nice if they are the other side of the fence. ๐
I am a vet. I don’t work on cows anymore though
I buy wonderful used books I take home and put in my book closet where they sit for years until I end up donating them back to the place where I first bought them.
I often buy wonderful used books that end up in the back of my book closet where I eventually donate them back to the place where I got them in the first place.
I understand about enjoying niche subjects. The Milk Lady of Bangalore sounds intriguing. I like cows.
My first attempt I mentioned how much I like Sy Montgomery books. I adore her writing style and how she researches.
Oh oh. Not accepting my comments?
Oh. Another Sy Montgomery fan. I absolutely love the way she writes and researches topics. Must read her turtle book!
My Week two post: https://headfullofbooks.blogspot.com/2025/11/nonfiction-november-week-two.html
Maple sugar! Oh, I’m hooked. I love the stuff. Added to my TBR, which is growing like a weed this month! I like your way of choosing books. Unfortunately, I’m old and decrepit and don’t get out much, so I do buy books. But I do eventually read them.
Thanks for sharing your process and your books
Happy nonfiction November!
Oooh Tim Mattheson! I remember him from National Lampoon’s Animal House, among other movies. Loved his snarky style. I read The Sugar Rush last year for Nonfiction November. It’s still one of my favorites! Right now I’m reading Nobody’s Girl. It’s a tough read…
