I started my Hindi word of the day project at work today. My new Hindi-speaking coworker looked at me like I had three heads for wanting to learn Hindi but she humored me. I decided to start with work related words so I asked about “dog.” She was really suspicious then. Apparently the Hindi word for dog can be used in a matter not unlike our word for a female dog. But I learned dog=coota and cat=billy. Those are the phonetic spellings. Somehow I didn’t know that Hindi used different characters. I’m not sure how I missed that bit of knowledge. She wrote the words down for me but I’m not that dedicated. I’ll just learn to say the words.
