It’s a non-bookish freebie today so let’s talk about the Fall Hiking Spree.
Every year between September 1 and November 30, our county metro parks run this event. You get a list of 10-12 trails. You pick 8 and go walk on them. The idea is that you go visit 8 different metro parks throughout the county.
This event is huge! It is supposedly the longest running event of its kind in the country. The 75th anniversary was a few years ago. The first year you get a hiking stick and after that you get a metal shield that gets applied to the stick each year. People have sticks that are covered with shields. People have started when they were little kids and have done it all their lives or sticks have been inherited. We started in 2012. Nemo has been doing it since he moved in here. Yes, dogs get shields too!
This year we had a few delays for Nemo to recover from emergency endoscopy to look for a foreign body and the husband to get a pacemaker. But once everyone got themselves straightened back around, we finished this weekend. Here’s a picture from each trail.

I love that your county does this! Where I live we have tons of trails, some short (around 1km) and some much longer (over 20km). We even have ones that connect to longer trails (like the TransCanada Trail). I feel like if we had something like this around here, the trails would be better maintained.
