Earlier in the year I signed up to be a Hugo voter. The Hugos are an award for excellence in science fiction and fantasy. In order to be a voter, you need to sign up to be a World Con member. It was around $50. For that you get a membership and can sign up to go to the convention (for more money). I wasn’t looking to go to that. I wanted a voter’s packet.

Here are the details about how to sign up in the future.

Around April, eligible voters were able to nominate 2025-published works in many categories. I nominated a few books that I had read that I really liked.

Starting in May, voters are able to download all of the finalists in order to be able to read them and vote by the beginning of August. (I didn’t get the email that said it was open and didn’t realize I could download until I went looking for the info.)

I won’t be able to read everything so I’m going to focus on a few categories at a time. So far I’ve voted on Best Artist and Best Poem. I want to make sure I read all of the novellas because I had already read two of them. I think it is realistic to look at the short stories and graphic novels. Maybe the novelettes if I’m on a roll.

So of course, I am reading none of those right now. I started with one of the YA books because it was foodie.

I’m not prioritizing the adult novels. I won’t get them all done by the time voting closes. The nice thing is though, that I have these books forever though so I can read them for my own knowledge after the voting closes.

I’m not interested in the other categories like TV and movies and fan-made materials. I don’t know enough about editors to vote. I don’t care to listen to the podcasts. I’m just about the books.

I think it was worth the money to get a copy of all these books that I wouldn’t have read otherwise. The only ones that I had read before this were:

Has anyone else ever done the Hugo voting?
