I am a firm believer in the Use Anything Laying Around for a Bookmark school of thought. I decided to go take pictures of my current physical books in progress to see what I’m actually using as bookmarks.

A Sticker

This is one of my current favorites when I’m being deliberate. Obviously I keep the backing on so it isn’t sticky. But then I get to see the pretty stickers and have a larger sized bookmark that is pretty sturdy.

A Receipt

The tried and true favorite. This happens to be the checkout receipt from the library but any random paper is acceptable. This card was previously used.

It’s a coupon I don’t want to lose.

Page Flags

I like page flags as bookmarks because they are cute. I have a set of cat ones that are open that I use sometimes. I like the cats sticking up out of the pages.

My Brain

Yeah, I’m one of those monsters that sometimes just remembers what page number I’m on. That only works if I’m coming back to the book fairly soon though. I tend to wander away from physical books easily though.

What Do I Tend Not to Use?

Actual bookmarks. I have stacks of all kinds from the rectangle of cardboard to magnets. I hardly ever reach for them. First of all, I don’t keep them anywhere convenient. They are on my bookshelf in a back bedroom. I don’t like the magnetic ones because it is too much work to open and close it whenever you turn the page and it is too heavy on the page to leave it in place until you quit reading. The hippo is cute when the book is closed. He floats along the top. But also impractical when you are actually reading.

What is your favorite type? Real bookmarks, whatever you find, dog-ears?
