This description had me at love, magic, and waffles. Of course, I had to listen to it.

Olivia is 28 and in a rut. She’s never left the small town near Buffalo NY where she grew up. She’s stayed in the same job forever. She decided to declare her interested in the guy she’s been pining for – and he rejected her. It is time to shake up her life.

I don’t have a lot of patience for characters who sit around and whine about how helpless they are. Olivia definitely had a bit of this, especially in the beginning of the story. She was all set to make major moves in her life. But when things actually do start to change she panics and looks for any way out. That’s a dynamic that is frustrating for me to listen to. It got better as the story went on.

On the plus side, this book does have a character whose entire magic is the ability to conjure delectable baked goods from thin air. In times of stress, the world’s best chocolate cake appears. Now that is a useful magic talent!
