The ugly blue carpet is gone. The 10 bajillion staples were removed and the staple holes filled. The stains were banished with linseed oil and steel wool. When we go away in November the stairs will be polyurethaned and then we will probably put a runner on them for safety and protection from pet nails.
I haven’t bought any coins lately. Ebay doesn’t have that many good deals any more. I found a site today though that is going to cost me money. It is called Beautiful Coins and that sums it up. I like cheap 1 oz silver coins with animals. This site gave me a whole lot of new coins to be looking for that I didn’t even know about. I had to buy one coin though. It doesn’t totally fit the criteria – it is about a 1/2 oz and it was way too much for that size of a coin but it was so pretty. It is from Poland (my ancestors would be proud) celebrating the 450th anniversary of the post office.
It has a 16th century postal courier on a horse and look at the pretty colors. It appealed to my “Oh, Look! Shiny!” side.
I promised to show the coins that I have that would probably cause the SO to lie down and have a heart attack if he even knew they existed – never mind what he’d do if he found out he was living with them.
Drumroll please….. from the Isle of Man………
Harry Potter coins!! I was so excited when I found out there were Harry Potter coins. I only have these two because they are expensive. On eBay they go for at least $55 a piece. I got these ones for much less of course! The picture is hard to see but the one of the left is Harry casting a spell. The one on the right is Harry and Ron flying in the car over the Burrow. There are lots of them but they don’t come up often in silver on eBay. You can find the easily in cupro-nickle.
The Isle of Man does lots of fun coins. I think it is a major export of theirs. They do a cat series with a new breed of cat every year. They come in all kinds of metals. I have one because these are also highly collectible (read, too rich for my blood!)
Earlier this year the SO encouraged me to buy a silver American Eagle coin. He has been a coin collector for a long time and buys one of these coins new from the US Mint every year. I figured it was a good idea in case of an apocolypse and I needed precious metals to buy medicine or in case the werewolves came and I needed silver to make bullets. Obviously I watch way too many movies!
I went to the bank to buy my coin. I figured the price per coin would vary daily based on the price of silver. They didn’t. The bank had a set price for the year. This seemed wrong to me so I started researching. Little did I know that it would create a monster.
I decided that there was way too much to learn about buying old coins. Besides, I like shiny and pretty. In the spirit of buy what you know I decided to start collecting coins with animals on them. I’ve put some constraints on myself so I don’t go crazy. I’m sticking to 1 oz silver coins. That lets me focus on a few lines. I also am cheap so I try to get them in the $20-30 per coin range including shipping. The spot price of silver per oz has gone from $13 to $18 this year. Add on some money for collectabiIity and middlemen and you get my price range. I love studying eBay for deals on coins. I love the thrill of the hunt.
China makes panda coins. They come in all different sizes and metals. Each year the panda is a different design. This makes them collectable so the price tends to be higher than just the value of the metal.
Here are the three I have so far. Two are 2009 and the other is 2007.
I haven’t told the SO that I’ve caught the coin bug. He might think I’m crazy for buying my coins based on pretty pictures instead of value or historical something-or-other. There are a few coins that I have that would absolutely kill him. I’ll show those ones off later!
